No post for today…

So I’ve spent 8 hours in the emergency room today over my headache. It’s so bad I woke up crying like a baby. Long story short, they have no clue why my head is hurting so bad (it still is) and how to fix it. While I was there they gave me around 10 injections, which eventually helped with the pain, but none of the meds can be prescribed, so now that I’m home I’m screwed and in EXTREME pain.

Tomorrow I’m calling a neurologist to see if he can figure out what’s wrong with my head.

Have you seen my new buttons?

At the top of each page on this site you’ll see I have a series of six buttons on the right side. Here’s what they are:

  Google +

  YouTube

  LinkedIn

  Facebook

  Twitter

  RSS Feed

Now for those of you that are yelling at your computer screen right now because I’m telling you things that you already know, there’s a reason for it. OK. Two reasons for it.

First, I know for a fact that there are members of this community that don’t know what those buttons do. They may not have even realized they are buttons to click on.

Second, I want to intentionally draw your attention to them.

Why? Because I want to connect with as many community members as possible! That’s right, I want you to click those buttons and connect with me so we can have more conversations. So we can get to know each other better. So you can have a better glimpse at who I am and what I do (because I mix business and personal on all of them to one level or another!).

So click a button. Click two or three! Let’s start having conversations.

And if you’re not sure which one to click but you’d like to click one just because, go to YouTube and subscribe to my page. I’m officially over 1,000 views now and looking to make it much, Much, MORE! By subscribing, and watching, you can help me grow that number.

My Story

Here’s the YouTube version of my story (they’ll let you have 15 minute videos now, this one is 14:57) that I recorded when I reworked my About page:

YouTube Preview Image

We all have a story to tell. As Donald Miller puts it in his book “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years”, we have all be given skills and abilities by God. He then gives us a pen and a blank piece of paper and tells us, “Go and write a story worth of what you’ve been given.”

When I read that book I knew, absolutely knew, that I was not living a life worthy of what I have been given by God. While Skye and Alexander are more and better than I could have ever dreamed, so much more of my life was lacking. I honestly believe God would look down and weep at the story I was allowing, not writing but allowing others to dictate, to be written.

That made a huge impact on my life. I decided it was time to start living a life worthy of what God provided me. Skye and I talked and we decided some major changes were needed.

One of those major changes was my job. Hence A Better Way of Business was started.

But today is not just about me. It’s about you. And your story. I’d love, Love, LOVE for all readers of this to either link to their about page in the comment section below or if you don’t have an about page, please tell us about yourself. I’m watching. I’m reading. I’m waiting to know your story.

90 Days to a SMASHING Success!

Today’s the day! 90 Days to a SMASHING Success! kicked off officially this morning. I made and posted the first video, and when I get Alexander to go to sleep I have SEVERAL things I’m excited to explore.

Here’s the deal, I have no clue how to notify you when I post a video. Since I’m posting everything about this 90 day adventure to it’s own page, I do not think it will show up in the feed. It’s going to be a safe bet to check it each morning. I should have something up by 9 AM each day (more than likely a good bit earlier, but let’s play it safe for now). At this point I’m planning on making a second video at the end of my day. No clue what the means yet. Could be 6 PM. Could be 10 PM. It might just be easier to watch the end of day recap and the morning video at the same time in the morning.

Also, I JUST REALIZED that you can not put comments on the page!!! This is being addressed as soon as possible. I’ve done a few things, but they don’t seem to be working. So I’m calling in the Big Guns to see if this can be remedied!

For now, I ask that anyone that would like to leave a comment regarding the 90 Day to a SMASHING Success! adventure, please do so here! I will let you know as soon as comments are enabled on the 90 Days page.

Thanks!

I want to give a GREAT BIG SHOT OUT to Marta Goertzen, from The Blue Jeans VA for making this happen. If you’re looking for a site developer with a lot of skill, gets it done quickly and right the first time, and charges a reasonable price, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN MARTA!!!

I would also like to say another great big thanks to Skye Bickett, my lovely wife, for creating my NEW ROCKING LOGO!!! You’ll be seeing it in multiple place, the banner, business cards, and we’re going to turn the BWB into a button to put in the signature of my emails.

I’M SO EXCITED! There’s so much awesomeness going on today I think my head might EXPLODE!!!

THANK YOU!

I just want to say a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to all you awesome people that made yesterday by FAR the busiest day at A Better Way of Business!!!

THANK YOU!

As many of you know, yesterday was my first video blog. I think it went well. I received NUMEROUS personal emails containing encouragement and some helpful tips on things I can improve. I received the most comments in a day on a single post, 7. And… I received the most page views in a single day…

99!!! This is a 254% increase over the previous best day of 39.

I know, I know, I KNOW! I JUST published the post on Quantity vs Quality where I explain as bloggers we should be more focused on having the right people view our blog than shear numbers. BUT IT’S REALLY GRATIFYING TO KNOW THAT SO MANY OF YOU VISITED MY BLOG!

So I honestly feel like I’m still in the crawling stage with A Better Way of Business. But soon I’ll be walking. And even quicker after that I’ll be RUNNING!

Hold on! It’s going to be a FANTASTIC ride!

Can I be so bold and so brave as to ask you for a favor? If you like what you’re seeing here. If you’re motivated and inspired by my writings and the lone video I’ve put out. Will you tell someone? Will you let your friends know about what’s happening at A Better Way of Business? Will you click the “Like” button for Facebook you see directly beside this post?

Thank YOU for making this happen.

As always, if there’s anyway I can help show you that there’s a better way of business, let me know!

Do your online interactions bring out the best in you?

Do online interactions bring out the best in you?

I’m fairly new to the online world. Not in using the internet, I actually starting going “online” back in the days of BBS’s, thanks to my childhood friend and neighbor, Dan. But until around the turn of this year I had never actually viewed the internet as a way to make actual personal connections. Prior to this year, I viewed the net as mostly for games, throw in a lot of emailing and social networking sites for friends I made offline, and you have my limited use of it in a nut shell.

But at the beginning of February I joined Free Agent Academy, an online community / school designed to help you start your business. This was the first conscious time that I joined a community online primarily to interact with people I had not first met offline.

Since then I have come across numerous blogs and podcasts that are crammed full of USEFUL, INSPIRATIONAL, and / or ENTERTAINING material. I have also made numerous new contacts with people that I would have never interacted with if not for coming across these people online. Several of these new connections have blossomed into friendships that I am very grateful for.

Of all the interactions with other people, be it through forums, comments, emails, chats, etc I’d say 99.9% have stayed positive and been beneficial. It’s the 0.1% and I want to talk about today.

And not even the 0.1% that I’ve experienced. Because honestly, I REALLY haven’t had very negative experiences online. I think once or twice there was the potential to get into an argument through the net with someone, but I didn’t see the point. So regardless of what was said to me, I let a negative conversation die. If need be, I’ll go so far as to block someone, but that hasn’t had to happen yet.

However, last week I came across two instances of people being unnecessarily rude online at other people’s sites. These two instances are what spurred this post. Both instances revolved around a follower of a blog spewing acid at a blogger. In one case, the follower left a stinging comment condemning the writer, and then explaining how the writer doesn’t live up to another blogger. In the second instance I didn’t actually see the email, but a follower decided they would take the opportunity to verbally dissect and destroy the blogger’s life due to a perceived slight from the blogger (in actuality, the blogger never slighted the follower, the follower simply didn’t read what was actually written, got offended, and then went on the offensive).

To top it off, the follower that left the comment was so BOLD and BRAVE that the comment was left under an “Anonymous” name on the blog.

Now I understand that as a blogger I am putting myself out into the public domain. And in doing this I open myself up to both constructive and petty criticism. Ok, I get that.

But what I want you to think about today is do your online interactions bring out the best in you? When you’re interacting with the online communities you participate in the most, are you providing people with a courteous, respectful you? Or do you just say whatever you want, however you feel the urge, because it’s online. Who care?

Because of your interactions with others online, do people get excited when they find out they’re going to get to meet you personally at an upcoming event? Or are you considering hiring security for yourself because you’re likely to get punched in the face because of vicious comments you make daily?

Do you consciously realize that you are dealing with LIVE HUMAN BEINGS on the other side of your comments or emails, or do you put down the first acidic thoughts you have with the thought of, “Take that you ASS!” when you hit send or post comment?

Because if you are participating online in an attempt to build your community I REALLY hope you make sure that your online interactions ARE bringing out the BEST IN YOU. Not the worst.

So please, please, PLEASE, before you hit send, before you click post, read over what you’re saying and make sure that it’s bringing out the best in you!
